Description: The anti-strip-search
campaign claimed that an average of 24 women had been strip searched
1,899 times in 2 years. The government response was that it was a necessary
security measure, ignoring particular Catholic sensitivities and a wider
concern dating back at least to the Suffragettes. Support for the campaign
extended beyond the immediate republican constituency to the radical
wing of the Womens Movement.
